QOk ladies!  I'm gonna give a tutorial a shot here.  Some of the photos are kind of fuzzy but I still think you can get the general idea.  Keep in mind that this is the way I find my hairline and how I root the crown swirl.  There are other ways out there and maybe the other ways are even better-this is just what works for me.  Please feel free to comment, correct or add to this if you have found a better way!

I know I probably don't have to say this but I will "just in case"...please don't copy or share this tutorial without checking with me first as the photo skills are lacking quite a bit and I would be embarassed for others (that don't know my babies so well) to get ahold of it to critique...

Stephanie Sullivan roots her heads like this too, except she roots one strand at a time. I just can't get the hang of it. I have to start at the front of the head . . . or the bottom and work up to the center. Otherwise, the hair keeps getting caught. UGH! I think I would rather root from the center though, because then when the front of the head is done, it's all done! I don't have to get anxious about finishing the rest of it. As it is, I do the front and sides first, so that the back is left for last. It's agonizing, because I just want it finished so that I can put the doll together. I always start rooting the crown first and then i start at the front.
Right now i'm doing an AA baby with lots and lots of very fine mohair.
I've been rooting for over hours and hours and i'm halfway !!!But i love to root, though i'm so curious what she will look like !!!

I love to root too. It's so relaxing and peaceful. I do get anxious to get it done though, especially the swirl, which is the last thing that I do. I'm working on one right now with very fine mohair as well and it's taking forever. He looks great so far though. Very Happy

Thanks for the tips on the hairline Doris. The crown circle that you do is how I do it too, I leave that until last though. I usually root the front then the sides and lastly the back leaving a circle at the crown about 6 -7 cm.

I usually do the same, but tried this and it works, these tips are from a friend Suebee, her babies are always beautiful.

Audrey, this is not my baby shown, it is from Suebee of Lullaby Lane Nursery, her babies are always so beautiful, Suebee, allowed me to show this on the forum.
I wish I could take credit for this rooted head....

Love the tips on rooting... it's always a struggle for me even though it usually turns fine. I usually start around the front of head because I want to see if I really like color of the hair for baby. then I work around to the side.. back and the other side. I usually do the crown last for I'm not working through the other hair on the head. I have finally found a pretty good needle that allows for only one hair at a time and finally think I have gotten the hang of sparse hair. Sometimes I get a little heavy handed with hair. The trick... to me is to have great mohair! This is my latest baby...
