| I' m busy rooting little Noah, a Jessica Schenk sculpt. I always use a heated rice sock when rooting, this time the mohair is pullimpng inepwards when I take the rice sock out,,, I wonder if this is because the rice is drying out, and should be replaced?.. This is the second head being rooted with the same rice sock, usually I get at least three four heads done before I change the rice. Has anyone else had problems rooting Noah? I'm now thinking I will change the rice for each baby.
Do you other ladies use a rice sock? Hugs Doris

| Doris,I now put hot rice but without sock.I´ve noticed it´s better for me as this way no hair come out with the sock. The only problem is tu put it into with a funnel and I put some material and a boutiful plug to close the head while I´m rooting. Hope this help | |

| Thanks for the tip Cristina, I've now filled the head with fresh rice, hope it doesn't stick to the hair inside, never thought of that before hand Hugs Doris | |

| :*&: Cristina, than you so much for this tip, it works brilliantly, I shall use this method all the time now. I only had one problem, my telephone went and when I got up to answer it I accidentally pulled out the sock I had plugged up the neck, and I had a nice trail of rice, haha, but solved that, I filled a pop sock with some wadding and used that to plug the neck and nothing escapes from that.
iekie, never thought about that,..... Hugs Doris

| I don't use a rice sock but for heat I use an a small angle poise lamp with an ordinary bulb in. I usually root at the dining table, I have a floor standing daylight magnifying lamp beside me as I cant see to root one hair at a time without it (its my age ) and have the small lamp on the table directed at the area that I'm rooting for heat so it does save me having to keep stopping to reheat a rice sock but if I leave the table I always turn off the small lamp as my friend once melted the edge of her magnifyer. Only problem I have had lately was mohair shedding after weeks of rooting, very frustrating having to patch up. I was using crown needles and don't think the hair was going into the head far enough so have changed to 3 barb along the shaft and it seems to have solved the problem. | |

| I use the daylight light to work by and it does warm the heads up. I stuff the head with carrier bags to give some density and when I pull them out they just slide out of the bags. Felting needles were made for joining fabirc and ribbons etc together so I find if you root into a sick it will mesh the fabric and mohair together a bit | |

| This so little head has been a nightmare, one side looks so bad the hair has been left like stubble or disappeared and hardly any left, I am using tweezers to pull some of the hair back, and then rerooting. Using the rice direct is so good, but forgot again to plug the bottom tightly and some rice escaped, boy won't I be glad when this head is done.....

| Hello Maxine, welcome to the forum.
I use 42g crown and 43g crown needles, the 42g are the stronger of the two, when you root are you warming your head first? this makes the vinyl softer and more easy for the needle to penetrate. It takes practice to do one to two hairs at a time, I keep a pair if tweezers at hand to take out any excess. Also it is a great help if you have a magnifying lamp, I couldn't be without mine. Hope this helps Hugs Doris

| A lot of the needles are really bendy and if it's your first reborn you will snap a lot I know I did. I think I broke about 10 on my first doll. I use 43 german fork needles and they never break. | |
