I love smocking, and embroidery, I wish I had one of the pleather machines.
But even if you don't do smocking, there are lots of tips and tutoriials here,

I used to smock and have a pleather but I find my fingers don't much like hand sewing these days

I always said I would get myself a pleater, I find hand sewing very relaxing, but like you, my fingers, don't like it...

I remember too learning to do smocking at school....many many moons ago.. Shocked . My 1st project in sewing class in secondry school was to make a apron,as so was everyone elses, then we could choose different projects throughout the terms, i made a pink toy elephant, flowered skirt and a blue gypsy top for my self, which i did wear afterwards Very Happy , a cushion, and a pencil case I dont do much sewing now, my sewing machine is only a little cheap one, and its not very good on the stitching, ive tried to alter it but doesnt get much better, so i normally hand stitch or use fabric glue for mini things.... Rolling Eyes

Do they still do sewing class in schools now, does anyone know? Question

Oh yes we always had to make the apron so we could use it in Domestic Science, yawn yawn. After that we could also choose, I had a Mary Quant pattern for a gingham blouse with a smocked . I loved doing that and it looked so sweet with a white peter pan collar, wish I still had it and the pattern too.

I had an uneasy relationship with my sewing teacher, my mother being a dressmaker and tailoress had different methods, mainly shortcuts LOL, they don't like shortcuts in school much so there was always a bit of friction there. Especially since I decided not to burden myself with doing ) level Domestic Science and Sewing on top of everything else I was doing, didn't see the need for it but Miss Johnson said I did need it if I was ever going to be married with a family LOL. The 1960's were just coming in with a clang to change all that.

One foot note is Miss Johnson was engaged to be married and her boyfriend was John Major who became Prime Minister, just a little name drop there LOL

U din't do much in the clothes making department these days except baby sized things but I have been watching the Great British Sewing Bee which I loved and I did buy the book which is a really really good book. I just made some cushions that they showed on the programme
